Silk’n Soft, the BPA-Free toilet paper
Why should you care?
It may come as a surprise that many brands of bathroom tissue made from recycled paper contain BPA (Bisphenol A), but they do. BPA enters the recycling process through the raw material collected to produce it. Toilet paper, napkins, newspapers, tickets, printing paper, and the thermal paper used for receipts usually contain BPA, which is then absorbed through the skin when we handle them.
Bisphenol A, or BPA, is chemically similar to the hormone estrogen. Its presence in our bodies has been linked to problems with reproduction and sexual development, behavioural and developmental problems in young children, male impotence, heart disease, and to some kinds of cancer.
On October 18, 2008, the Government of Canada released its final assessment report, including the Government’s proposed risk management strategies, to ensure that Canadian exposure to BPA is kept as low as possible, particularly for newborns and infants.
Silk’n Soft does not contain BPA. We use bamboo, a member of the grass family, to produce it. Not recycled paper. Therefore, Silk’n Soft is BPA-free.
Test Results
We sent Silk’n Soft along with other “eco-friendly” brands of tissue made from recycled paper into an independent Canadian lab for the purpose of BPA (Bisphenol A) testing. While Silk’n Soft proved to be BPA free, other recycled paper national brands still contain BPA at levels in the double digits based on ug/g measurements.
A research by the University of Calgary indicates that even at low doses BPA can be harmful and even affect embryonic brain development.
With so much evidence, it is great news that Environment Canada is working with Canadian pulp mills to “voluntarily” reduce their BPA output.
To this day, BPA is still found in many recycled papers and smart consumers continue to use better alternatives. Try our tree-free and BPA-free toilet paper Silk’n Soft –white or unbleached–, plus try the super absorbent, reusable, and compostable Dragon Towels instead of paper towels.
